Brian Ray’s career has included stints as guitarist and musical director for Etta James as well extensive studio work with Steve Goodman, Rita Coolidge, Kelly Clarkson, Juanes, Willy Deville, Shakira and France’s legendary Johnny Hallyday.
He is probably most well known for his ongoing gig with Paul McCartney. As a member of the former Beatle’s touring band for nearly 20 years, Ray plays guitar, sings backing vocals, and takes over on bass whenever the boss picks up a guitar or sits down at the piano.
Since the pandemic, Ray’s released several singles on Wicked Cool Records, including “Got A New Thing,” which was written, produced and arranged by Ray who sings, plays guitars, and keyboards on it. The song also features Weezer’s Scott Shriner on bass and background vocals and Abe Laboriel Jr., a Paul McCartney bandmate of Ray’s, on drums and additional vocals. A raucous take on Procol Harum’s “Whiskey Train” with Carla Olson of the Textones is on the flipside. An equally burning version of Willie Dixon’s “I Ain’t Superstitious” came out over the summer.
Six of his Ray’s single releases have been certified as LSUG’s “The Coolest Song in the World,” including such recent releases as “Pirate Radio.” Junkman Radio had the opportunity to chat with Ray about his new music and experiences with various musical projects including his role in Paul McCartney’s band.
