The Steve Lukather Interview

For everything that guitarist Steve Lukather has accomplished as a member of Toto and a working musician who’s played with everyone from George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to Michael Jackson, Miles Davis and Aretha Franklin — you couldn’t talk to a more grateful, humble human being. I saw him rip it up with Ringo Starr’s All-Starrs at the Greek Theatre in LA in 2012, and afterward commended him on his playing. He smiled uneasily, seemingly embarrassed by the compliment.

Recently overcoming his own demons and other personal challenges (divorce, the death of his mother and business matters), the guitarist is busier than ever — between legs with the All-Starrs, issuing his seventh solo album Transition, and hitting the road with Toto this summer to celebrate their 35th anniversary. In the following interview, we touch on all of that and more. Brutally honest and forthright in every conceivable way, Lukather spoke passionately about his solo efforts, working with other musicians, the music business, the future of Toto and his station in life. He is most definitely in a good place.
