Journey | Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 – CD Review

If Journey’s first Volume of Greatest Hits was the bullet fired, Greatest Hits Vol.2 is definitely the damage left in its wake. Like all good Greatest Hits compilations the first song chosen to start sets the mood for the listener, allowing them to know what type of “journey” they are about to be taken on. “Stone in Love” does just that for the entirety of this album. It is an air guitar inspiring sonata, and for those who prefer a sing along, I suggest you roll up your car windows and do your best to keep up.

Journey is known for their heart-pumping tunes, perfect for any cinematic montage – which makes this the ideal soundtrack for the daily commute, or an afternoon spent working on the car. Midway through, the groove turns mellow, creating a good atmosphere for time spent on the couch alone with your special someone, especially “Anytime,” followed by “Walks Like A Lady” and “Little Girl” – all endearing songs that should be heard while sharing the warm embrace of another. Though this collection is dominated by love songs, it never loses its rock feel. Ending this second volume of hits is “Mother, Father,” a live recording from Journey’s 1981 concert in Houston, Texas. It is the perfect end to this web of harmonization.

Steve Perry’s vocals never disappoint. He touches fans with his highly personal lyrics and emotionally heavy vocal patterns. Neil Schon of course saturates the album with his unique style of guitar play that gives Journey it’s always recognizable sound. This disc is testament as to why Journey has lasted through the years of changing music genres and guitar outlaws. They seem to always find fans, no matter if they were born after or before the band’s popularity. Listening to Greatest Hits Vol.2, you will know exactly why.
