One could easily Night Ranger defined 80s American melodic rock. And across the eighteen tracks on offer on the band’s Best Of, that argument is made plain. There’s the massive first single and hit from the band, “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me,” the silly lyric of “(You Can Still) Rock in America,” with Glenn Hughes on backing vocal (who knew?), and the anthemic power ballad “Sister Christian,” (the soundtrack to my favorite moment in the movie, Boogie Nights), sounding absolutely pristine remixed and remastered.
There’s “Breakout” and “Tomorrow” from the band’s 12th and most recent studio album, 2021’s ATBPO, again showcasing some trite rock lyrics, something this band, and many others from their time, know too well. But these later songs are as heavy as any of the band’s early stuff. Best Of is not just a collection looking back on the band’s past 20 years, though. Also featured is a fresh take on “Wasted Time” recorded live at Sweetwater Studios, plus a live performance of “Feliz Navidad,” and the bonus track “Hole In The Sun” to end the collection.
While Night Ranger carries on, playing around the country, the hits just keep coming. For their fans, 80s melodic rock aficionados, or just about anybody who wants some of the best from the hard rockin’ 80s, 90s, and beyond, Best Of is full of the hits and more.
